Atmosphere

Atmosphere is a hip-hop group from Minneapolis that centers around rapper Slug (aka Sean Daley). The son of a black father and a white mother who divorced when he was a teenager, Slug became entranced with hip-hop, graffiti, and breakdancing, and formed the Rhyme Sayers Collective with two high school friends — Siddiq Ali (Stress) and Derek Turner (Spawn). After some early gigs as Urban Atmosphere, where Slug DJed behind Spawn’s rhyming, the pair hooked up with producer Ant (Anthony Davis), as well as like-minded locals such as MC Musab, Mr. Gene Poole, and the Abstract Pack, forming an underground hip-hop clique dedicated to freestyling, clever and complex lyrics, and anti-gangsta positivity. In 1998, Atmosphere released its debut album, Overcast!, which quickly became regarded as an underground hip-hop classic thanks to Slug’s deeply personal, poetic musings, as well as Ant’s bare-bones — but inventive — production. The next Atmosphere album was titled Sad Clown Bad Dub II, a 2000 set originally sold while the group was on tour. (Now out of print, it’s a highly sought-after collector’s item). A year later, the group released Lucy Ford: The Atmosphere EP’s, a collection of three EPs built around the theme of Slug’s complicated relationship with his ex-girlfriend, the lost love of his life. The group has toured consistently, both at home and overseas; while Ant usually doesn’t accompany the group on the road, Mr. Dibbs of the group 1200 Hobos often joins in behind the turntables and Slug is usually assisted on the mic by young rappers like the teenaged Eyedea. In June 2002, the group — down to the duo of Slug and Ant — unleashed God Loves Ugly, an 18-track effort that returned to previous themes (”F*@k You Lucy”), but also contained the group’s most pop-friendly single to date, “Modern Man’s Hustle.” By this time indie rap superstars, Atmosphere returned with their fourth album, Seven’s Travels, in 2003, followed two years later by You Can’t Imagine How Much Fun We’re Having.

Members:

Slug (Sean Daley)
Slug was a member of a loose group known as The Rhymesayers Collective prior to the formation of Atmosphere. Its other members were Stress (Siddiq Ali) and Spawn (Derek Turner). Slug DJed behind the scenes and let Stress and Spawn handle lyrics. Later calling themselves Urban Atmosphere and garnering some underground notoriety, the group eventually formed a strong relationship with Ant (Anthony Davis) and began collaborating on music. Along with MC Musab (then Beyond), rapper Mr. Gene Poole, and the Abstract Pack they formed the mid-Nineties crew Headshots, with Slug appearing on the underground tape series HeadShots (1-7) (see Discography below). Every HeadShots volume allowed a member of the clique to showcase their talent, and HeadShots Vol. Seven was Slug’s tour de force.

Ant (Anthony Davis)
Ant produced his first CD,Comparison, for Musab (formerly known as Beyond). He has contributed to every Atmosphere album and has also produced albums for several members of the Rhymesayers Entertainment label. The only Atmosphere album featuring guest producers, including Jel and Moodswing 9, was Lucy Ford: The Atmosphere EPs. More recently, Ant released a two-part mixtape series titled Melodies and Memories featuring remixes of songs made in the late ’70s and throughout the ’80s.

Review: Metalcrypt (4.75/5)

The name of this band had actually kept me from getting any of their albums until now. I know, I know. I should know better, but it just didn’t sound like my kind of band. Well here is my mea culpa, because this is one of the best bands I have heard in years. I am unilaterally and completely impressed.

Tad Morose play power metal, but not what you’re thinking. There is no trace of the usual Italian-style crapola here. This is the real stuff: chugging, smokin’ riffs, time changes and all-around impressive songwriting, plus the soaring voice and melodies of frontman/lyricist Urban Breed. If comparisons must be drawn, I would say Tad Morose sound a good bit like Solitude Aeternus – only better and more uptempo. But truthfully I have never heard any other band that sounds quite like them. The songs here are both heavy and catchy, memorable after one listen. After just one spin I could look at the tracklist and have parts of the songs flash instantly into my head, and that does not happen to me often. This CD just gets cooler with every trip through, and even though I liked the album on first listen, after just a few days I keep liking it more with every listen. Highly addictive stuff.

The packaging is nice, with cool cover art by the multitalented Urban Breed. The lyrics are really a highlight here, as they are extremely cool. Dark, poetic and often just strange. I have never read lyrics quite like them, except maybe for the stuff John Arch used to write back in the day. (And from me, that is high praise)

This is one of those bands whose sound is very very hard to accurately describe. They’re just good, and their groovy riffs and haunting vocal melodies keep me coming back for more. I cannot believe a band this good got a CM contract, and I also cannot believe it took me this long to find them. Ignore the odd name, ignore any misgivings you might have. If you like power metal at all, buy this album.
